Wayne is an experienced strength coach with over ten years in the field. He is certified in Personal Training and Level 1-2 DBC biomechanics. Coach is also IMPACT and SafeSport certified. He holds a degree in General Studies from STCC and a B.S. in Health, Physical, Education, and Recreation from MVSU. Born and raised in Memphis, TN, Wayne’s journey from being cut from his middle school basketball team to success as a Division 1 athlete is a powerful story of perseverance and growth.
As a high school basketball star at Hillcrest High School, Wayne made a remarkable turnaround, starting varsity and captain for four years and amassing over 1,000 points. His accolades include being a two-time team MVP, three-time All-District/All-Region, and earning honors such as Commercial Appeal Best of Preps and honorable mention all-state. At the junior college level, Wayne gained honorable mention All-TJCCAA during his freshman season. He was slated to be a key participant on the 2005-2006 TCCAA championship team before obtaining a knee injury that required surgery, ultimately ending his junior college career. Despite battling significant injuries, including an ACL tear, Wayne earned a Division 1 basketball scholarship at MVSU, culminating his college career as a 2007 SWAC Regular Season Champion, 2008 SWAC Tournament Champion, and 2008 NCAA Tournament participant. He also met star volleyball player and now wife, current Director of BOLD Athletics, Coach Porsha, at MVSU.
After graduating, Wayne transitioned to coaching, serving as a varsity volunteer assistant coach and trainer at Overton High School from 2009-2016 and later as a 9th-grade coach and assistant varsity coach at Central High School from 2016-2019. In 2017, Porsha and Wayne founded BOLD, and his mission was to empower athletes by enhancing their confidence, performance, and injury reduction through specialized strength and conditioning programs for volleyball. His approach is rooted in his own experience of overcoming injuries and adversity, focusing on proper technique, consistency, dedication, and recovery. He said, “It’s all about getting 1% better every day.”
Wayne’s deep understanding of the athlete’s journey—from youth league star to late-blooming high school and college athlete—allows him to relate to and inspire athletes facing their own challenges, both mentally and physically. His commitment to helping athletes reach their highest potential while reducing injury risks makes him an invaluable asset to BOLD Athletics and its athletes.
